David Grant, Head of School, Chair of the Management Board
Dr Grant is a Co-Founder of BIS and has been involved in all aspects of school development since 2010. From 2011-13 he served as Chair of the Governing Board. From April 2014 to September 2015 he joined the school in a management role and rejoined staff in May 2016 as Development Director before serving as Head of School and Chair of the Management Board. Dr Grant has a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and MBA from Henley Management College. He has managed projects in many different sectors in Central Asia for both international development and major private sector investors. His experience includes teaching courses in development and economics at the University of Edinburgh and at OSCE Academy in Bishkek. He is also a trained administrator for the IB Diploma.
William Polan, Director of Studies
Mr Polan is a graduate from Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee. Following graduation from Rhodes, Mr Polan joined the US Peace Corps and spent two years living in a rural community in Azerbaijan where he conducted teacher training, implemented new approaches to education, and taught English to grades 4-6. After Peace Corps, Mr Polan completed his Masters of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Texas and taught English Language and Literature at an international school in Baku. Mr Polan joined ESCA-BIS in the summer of 2015 and has held various teaching and administrative roles within the school. Mr Polan is a trained PYP and MYP educator, passionate about IB’s internationally driven curriculum framework.
Makiko Inaba, IB Diploma Programme (DP) Coordinator
Ms Makiko has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Waseda University in Japan. Foreign languages and cultures have always been her passion and she has lived in the United States, South Korea, France, China and the Kyrgyz Republic in pursuit of that passion. She has experience tutoring students ranging from the elementary to high school level, and of teaching at publicly funded educational centers in South Korea. Ms Makiko joined BIS in summer 2014 and she is a much-loved teacher with exceptional skills in education. From summer 2017 Ms Makiko has taken over as Diploma Programme Coordinator so now has fewer teaching hours and is focused on success for our students in the Diploma Programme.
Dr Lance Tillman, Cambridge IGCSE Coordinator
Dr Tillman has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a PhD in Humanities an a wealth of teaching experience in the US, ranging from teaching Community College through to University levels. In 2006. he joined AUCA in Bishkek where he taught courses such as American Literature, World Religions, Contemporary American Issues, American Popular Culture, Rhetoric of Contemporary America, and English Composition He served as chair of the American Studies Department. Dr Tillman joined BIS in summer 2015 and he has been an inspiration to students in developing their critical thinking and improving English language writing and communication skills.
Frances Garsed, IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Coordinator
Ms Frances graduated from the University of Bristol with a BA (Hons) in German and Russian, before completing a PGDipEd in Modern Foreign Languages and an MA in Applied Professional Studies in Education from the University of Sheffield. Her teaching experience includes two years teaching Russian and German at The Latymer School, London, as well as experience teaching English to various levels in Uzbekistan, Russia, Austria and the Kyrgyz Republic. In addition to teaching, she has worked as a curriculum developer for English programmes at the University of Central Asia. Ms Frances joined BIS in summer 2017.

Carmen Prinsloo, Preschool Coordinator
Ms Carmen graduated from the North West University of South Africa with a BA of Education in Foundation Phase learning, and is a certified teacher at the South African Council of Educators accredited to teach Foundation Phase. Ms Carmen has worked in international preschools in both South Africa and South Korea for the last 4 years prior to joining BIS in summer 2017.
Chris Barclay, Inclusive Education Coordinator
Ms Barclay joined BIS in summer 2017 and brings a wealth of experience after teaching around the world for 30 years in a wide range of different settings. She is an Australian citizen with a Diploma in Teaching, Bachelor of Education and Qualified Teacher Status in the UK. Her work has included being Special Education Support Teacher in Hobart, Tasmania, Classroom Teacher in Yantai, China and UK state schools, as well as teaching in the Middle East, eastern Europe and Japan.
