ABOUT USSTAFF TEAM — Specialist Teaching Team 2017-18
LANCE TILLMAN, Teacher of World Literature, English, History and World Religions
Dr Tillman has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a PhD in Humanities an a wealth of teaching experience in the US, ranging from teaching Community College through to University levels. In 2006. he joined AUCA in Bishkek where he taught courses such as American Literature, World Religions, Contemporary American Issues, American Popular Culture, Rhetoric of Contemporary America, and English Composition He served as chair of the American Studies Department. Dr Tillman joined BIS in summer 2015 and he has been an inspiration to students in developing their critical thinking and improving English language writing and communication skills.
JASON LORENOWICZ, Individuals & Societies, Geography and History Teacher; Form Teacher MYP 3
Mr Jay is from Manitoba, Canada and has a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Mr Jay has been teaching overseas for 25 years and joined BIS in 2016 after teaching in Azerbaijan for three years. Mr Jay has spent 15 years in the Gulf States, including Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. He has also taught in Malawi, Maldives and England, among other places. His interests include travel, music, photography and sports.
JACQUES PRINSLOO, Individuals & Societies, Math and EAL Teacher; Form Teacher IGCSE 1
Mr Jacques has a PGCE in Secondary teaching from the University of South Africa, a diploma in Investment management from the University of South Africa, a Bachelors in Economics from the University of Pretoria, a Diploma in teaching English as an Additional Language and is currently completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Illinois. Mr Prinsloo taught EAL in South Korea for several years before joining BIS in summer 2017. He also has coaching experience in soccer and cricket at elementary level and rugby at high school level.
FRANCES GARSED, Head of Languages; German and Russian Teacher; MYP Coordinator
Ms Frances graduated from the University of Bristol with a BA (Hons) in German and Russian, before completing a PGDipEd in Modern Foreign Languages and an MA in Applied Professional Studies in Education from the University of Sheffield. Her teaching experience includes two years teaching Russian and German at The Latymer School, London, as well as experience teaching English to various levels in Uzbekistan, Russia, Austria and the Kyrgyz Republic. In addition to teaching, she has worked as a curriculum developer for English programmes at the University of Central Asia. Ms Frances joined BIS in summer 2017.
MAKIKO INABA, IB Diploma Programme (DP) Coordinator; East Asian Languages Teacher; Form Teacher DP 1
Ms Makiko has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Waseda University in Japan. Foreign languages and cultures have always been her passion and she has lived in the United States, South Korea, France, China and the Kyrgyz Republic in pursuit of that passion. She has experience tutoring students ranging from the elementary to high school level, and of teaching at publicly funded educational centers in South Korea. Ms Makiko joined BIS in summer 2014 and she is a much-loved teacher with exceptional skills in education. From summer 2017 Ms Makiko has taken over as Diploma Programme Coordinator so now has fewer teaching hours and is focused on success for our students in the Diploma Programme.
NAZIRA ALMASBEKOVA, Mandarin Teacher
Ms.Nazira has a Masters degree from University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, and a Diploma from Beijing Language and Culture University. She has worked as a teacher and interpreter in China and joined BIS in summer 2017, combining roles as Mandarin Teacher and Co-Teacher in the Primary 6 Class.
CRISTINA BAEZ, Spanish Teacher
Ms Cristina joined BIS in summer 2016 following two years at Hillside Iinternational Boarding School in Massachusetts. She has worked in the education field for seven years and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Massachusetts – Boston as well as the TESOL/TESL/TEFL Certification. Ms Cristina believes it is essential to recognize each student and validate their strengths through supportive and motivating praise, encouraging them to do their best. From summer 2017, Ms Cristina is a Spanish Teacher for the IB Diploma Programme
DARREN MCQUAY, English Teacher
Mr Darren is an experienced English language teacher with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons.) in Linguistics from Bangor University and a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from Edge Hill University. He has been at BIS since summer 2016 and has proven to be a creative, inventive and passionate teacher of English. Mr. Darren is always looking for new challenges and ways to improve his standard of teaching.
STEPHANIE JACKSON, Teacher of English and English as an Additional Language (EAL); Form Teacher MYP 2
Ms Stephanie has a Master of Science in Education and Bachelor of Arts in Education and Social Studies from Elmira College, New York, USA. She recently completed a two year Peace Corps Volunteer Program in Karakol, teaching English and social studies to young people. Ms Stephanie has US citizenship and speaks Kyrgyz. Ms Stephanie joined BIS in summer 2017
SPENCER SANTA COLOMA, EAL and History Teacher; Extended Essay Coordinator
Mr Spencer has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and History from, Grand Valley State University Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, and a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Before joining BIS in summer 2017, Mr Spencer spent a year teaching English at Yildirim Beyazit University, Ankara, Turkey, following two years in the Kyrgyz Republic teaching English to school students as a Peace Corp Volunteer.
EUNCHONG (GRACE) PARK, EAL Teacher; NEASC Accreditation Coordinator
Ms Park has a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education and English from Gordon College, Wenham, Massachusetts, USA, and teaching experience in both the US and in Kyrgyzstan. Ms Park is a Korean citizen, who joined BIS in summer 2017. She is organizing the NEASC Accreditation process and also teaching English as an Additional Language.
VICTORIA WHALL, Teacher of English as an Additional Language
Ms Victoria joined BIS in 2016 to teach English as an Additional Language. She has a Bachelor’s of Social Science in Economics and Russian Studies from the University of Birmingham and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism (TV and Radio) from City University in London. She also has a CELTA teaching qualification to teach English as a Second Language and has taught English at Dongobesh Secondary School in Tanzania and at British Council language camps in Israel. Before becoming a teacher, Victoria worked as a freelance journalist for the BBC reporting from Mongolia. Victoria is a keen student of languages and speaks Russian, French and English.
PIERRE GRAU, French Language Teacher
Mr Pierre is a qualified teacher of French. He holds a Master’s degree with honours in Teaching, specializing in French as a foreign language, and a Bachelor's has a degree (hons) in French Literature from Amiens University in France. He has been teaching for seven years to a wide range of levels, from kindergarten to university, in Berlin, Lahore and Bishkek. He has recently started a second Master’s degree in Digital Education and Pedagogical Engineering, with research on Language Resources Centres and self-guided learning for primary and secondary pupils. He played in the Under-18 national basketball championship of France and is the coach of our BIS basketball team.
LAILO YOUSSOUP-AKHOUNOVA, French and Russian Language Teacher
Ms Lailo joined BIS as a French language teacher in 2016. She has extensive experience teaching both French and Russian languages, including at local universities, the Alliance Francaise and Embassies. She graduated in 1984 from the Kyrgyz National University. In addition to teaching, Ms. Lailo is a professional translator.
INDIRA BEKKOENOVA, Russian Language Teacher
Ms Indira graduated from the Kyrgyz National University, where she studied Russian philology. She has extensive experience teaching Russian language and literature to school and university students. She joined the BIS team in 2013 and loves the warm and friendly environment.
NAZGUL KAKELOVA, Russian & Kyrgyz Language, and Host Country Studies Teacher
Ms Nazgula has a Degree in Teaching Russian Language from the Kyrgyz State National University. And over 20 years teaching experience in schools in the Kyrgyz Republic. Ms Nazgula joined BIS in summer 2016.
NAZGUL SULTAKEEVA, Kyrgyz Language Teacher
Ms Nazgul has a Postgraduate degree in Kyrgyz Philology from Arabaev Kyrgyz State University. She has over 10 years teaching experience in universities in the Kyrgyz Republic. Ms Nazgul joined BIS in summer 2017.
CHYNARA ABDYRAEVA, Russian Teacher & National Curriculum Coordinator
Ms Chynara has a Master Degree with distinction as a language teacher and is currently a candidate of philological scientist. Literature. Ms Chynara joined BIS in summer 2017.
EATHAN NARIMATSU, Head of Science; Science and Biology Teacher
Mr Narimatsu graduated from the University of Washington, USA; with a BSc in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. He also studied Epidemiology at Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Public Health at the University of Southern Denmark. After graduating he spent three years managing laboratories for medical research before changing careers to spend two years as a Peace Corps Health Volunteer in Kyrgyzstan. Mr Narimatsu joined BIS in summer 2017 as Head of Science.
ALISHER ARSTANBEK, Science, Physics and Mathematics Teacher; Form Teacher MYP 1
Mr Alisher has a Specialist Degree in Engineering from the Kyrgyz Russian Slavic University (KRSU) and has teaching and research experience at several educational institutions. He is currently completing his PhD in Engineering at the Kyrgyz Russian Slavic University while he works full time at BIS. He enjoys teaching and helping students discover their abilities and talents. Alisher joined BIS in 2016 and teaches science and mathematics in MYP and Physics for the IB Diploma.
KUNDUZ CHOMONOVA, Science Laboratory Technician
Ms Kunduz has a Diploma in teaching Biology from Jalal-Abad State University and has been at BIS since October 2011. She loves working with students and, since 2016, has had a specialist role in science to ensure that our laboratory is always fully equipped and safe, as well as working with students during science lessons.
AZAMAT KASYMOV, Head of Mathematics; Mathematics & Economics Teacher
Mr Azamat has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) where he also taught undergraduate level mathematics. He is a part-time research assistant at AUCA and has helped to write several mathematics textbooks for primary through to university level mathematics. Mr Azamat enjoys teaching mathematics at BIS with a special focus on our more advanced students. Mr Azamat is also currently completing his PhD in Economics.
TOON CAVENS, Mathematics and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Teacher
Mr Cavens is originally from Belgium where he studied Mathematics and Economics. Afterwards he studied Philosophy in Paris and English Literature in London. He joined BIS in summer 2016 to teach Mathematics and Theory of Knowledge. Mr Cavens hopes to instill in his students a life-long passion for learning, and to help them to develop their own ideas.
THIERRY TABERNA, Head of Computer Science; Computer Science and Design Teacher; Form Teacher DP 2
Mr Thierry has a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Nantes, and a Master’s Degree in Computing from the University of Toulouse and a Degree of Teaching French as a Second Language (DAEFLE).. He has previously worked as a software engineer and software developer in various companies in France. Mr Thierry joined BIS in summer 2015 and has been very effective in inspiring a wide range of students to improve their ICT, design and coding skills.
JAMES GRANT, Athletics Director; PE Teacher; Individuals & Societies Teacher; Form Teacher IGCSE2
Mr Grant graduated from Flinders University, South Australia with a Bachelor of Education (Middle & Secondary); Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in Physical Education & Health and minor in Humanities. Mr Grant is a registered and qualified teacher in South Australia and has worked in various international schools in Australia and Asia before joining BIS in summer 2017.
LILIYA TOKTAROVA, PE Teacher
Ms Lilia has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the American University of Central Asia and later graduated from the Kyrgyz Academy of Physical Culture and Sports Track and Field Department with a Master of Arts in the theory of physical culture and sports. Ms Lilia joined BIS as a PE Teacher in 2013.
ANARA BAISALOVA, Head of Visual and Performing Arts; Music Teacher
Ms Anara has over 10 years of experience in teaching piano to students of different ages and is a certified accompanist for chamber musicians and voice/ballet artists. She has accompanied various artists and performances, and has taught Piano as a Musical Performance Art in Kyrgyzstan and in South Korea. Anara joined BIS in winter 2015 and has a key role in preparing students for school performances.
AIDAI SHARSHEKEEVA, Art Teacher, Middle & High School
Ms Aidai has a BA in Surface Design from London College of Communications, and also studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. After graduating she worked as a designer and fabric embroiderer with key fashion brands in London before returning to the Kyrgyz Republic to work with artists and designers. She also taught at the University of Management and Design and more recently taught art and design in an international school for all ages from Primary to High school. Ms Aidai joined BIS in summer 2017 to teach art and design in middle and high school.
ANNA BALDUK, Art Teacher
Ms Anna studied at the Children’s Art School and graduated from the Kyrgyz State Art School in 1991 with a degree in Teaching Art. She has over 20 years’ experience in teaching art to children of various ages and joined the BIS team in 2013.
MEERIM MAKAMBAEVA, Dance Teacher & PE Teacher for Preschool
Ms Meerim graduated in Economics from the Kyrgyz Russian Slavic University. She has a Diploma in Folk and Modern Dance in the National Ensemble of Kyrgyzstan “Jash-Kyal” where she studied for 12 years. She also participated in many dance competitions and Festivals and continues to teach dance because it is her passion. Ms Meerim joined BIS in 2016.
CHRIS BARCLAY, Inclusive Education Coordinator; Behaviour Coach; Child Protection Officer
Ms Barclay joined BIS in summer 2017 and brings a wealth of experience after teaching around the world for 30 years in a wide range of different settings. She is an Australian citizen with a Diploma in Teaching, Bachelor of Education and Qualified Teacher Status in the UK. Her work has included being Special Education Support Teacher in Hobart, Tasmania, Classroom Teacher in Yantai, China and UK state schools, as well as teaching in the Middle East, eastern Europe and Japan.
ELENA KHARCHENKO, Librarian & ECA Coordinator
Ms Elena graduated from Kyrgyz Russian Slavic University and joined BIS in May 2016 as a Teaching Assistant. In 2016/17 Ms Elena was Assistant Librarian and is now the main Librarian for the school. The BIS Library now has thousands of books and separate library/study areas for Primary and Middle/High School students with both indoor and outdoor reading areas.
AIDA IRSALIEVA, Community Projects Coordinator (IBDP CAS & MYP), Host Country Studies Teacher
Ms Aida graduated from the Kyrgyz Russian Slavic University in Bishkek with a Diploma in International Relations. She joined the BIS team in 2015 and has experience in both admin and teaching roles, including as Co-Teacher with Primary 6 in 2016/17. From summer 2017, Ms Aida is the CAS Coordinator for the IB Diploma Programme, the Community Projects Coordinator for the IB Middle Years Programme and Teacher of Host Country Studies in the MYP.
